Growing up in the Colorado mountains, there was never a shortage of snow for building snowmen during the winter months. I’m not exactly sure why snowmen are always so magical and fun, but I built at least one every year of my childhood. I loved scouring around to find the perfect accessories. And since my dad worked on coal trains, we always had a few small chunks of coal lying around that were just begging to be used as snowman eyes, mouths, and buttons. There were even some years that we spray-painted clothes onto our snowman. π
We have yet to receive enough snowfall this year to build a life-size snowman. In fact, the snow that fell on New Year’s Eve has already melted away. We’ve actually been enjoying 50 degree weather for the past several days…and trust me, I’m not complaining. It’s been so nice being able to go outside and soak up some sunshine. Though the lack of snow certainly makes celebrating our winter theme this month that much more difficult. Since we can’t go outside to build a snowman, I figured we could bring the magic inside, and create our very own Snowman-on-a-Stick Snack!
This simple snack/dessert is not just something your kiddos will enjoy eating…it’s also a snack that they will love creating – all by themselves. I have yet to meet a young child who does not enjoy playing with food. In fact, that’s sometimes a struggle at mealtimes in our house – we always seem to be working on good table manners and eating politely. That being said, I’ve found that our little nugget is less inclined to play with her food at the table, if she’s had an opportunity to get her hands dirty during the preparations. So…this snowman snack is perfect!
Our wintry snack was inspired by these adorable Snowman Milk Bottles, that I found over on Mom Endeavors. We actually loved the little milk bottle snowmen so much, we ended up making a few of our own…for a different afternoon snack. You gotta use up those extra powdered sugar donuts somehow – right?!? They were super cute and scrumptious!
Snowman-on-a-Stick Snack
Ingredients:
- Powdered Sugar Donuts
- Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peel Licorice
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (small)
- Candy Corn
- Black Icing Pen
- Wooden Skewers
Instructions:
- Start by sliding a wooden skewer through three powdered sugar donuts, to create your snowman’s body.
- Pull apart a string of licorice (scarf) and tie it around the neck of the snowman (between the first and second donuts)
- Place a piece of candy corn in the center of the first (top) donut, for the snowman’s carrot nose.
- Now, it’s time to add the Reese’s hat! Slide a peanut butter cup onto the skewer and down to the first (top) donut.
- Lastly, add the eyes, mouth, and buttons – using the black icing pen. I found it necessary to utilize a toothpick for this particular task, as it was a bit tricky getting the icing to stick to the powdered sugar.
- Repeat the above steps for each Snowman-on-a-Stick that you would like to create.
- Enjoy with a nice cold glass of milk!
It turns out that building a snowman indoors can be loads of fun! Next Tuesday, we will be sharing even more snowmen that we constructed indoors (of the craft variety) – so stay tuned!
