Have you and your kiddos ever tried to trap a leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day? I’m sure you have! π We set traps with our little nugget for a couple of years – always failing in our attempts to capture one of the mischievous little green guys. But last year…our daughter boldly decided to leave the leprechauns treats, instead of trying to trap them. “Why do we leave cookies out for Santa, but try to trap leprechauns?” she asked. “I want to make them special treats too!” And so…we made these super simple, yet incredibly cute and colorful, Rainbow Leprechaun Treats!
I must admit, her act of kindness totally made me melt. I will always cherish, appreciate, and support her generous heart – it’s one of the many qualities about her that I hope she holds on to for the rest of her life. Needless to say, I quickly jumped on board the leprechaun treat train! And what would a leprechaun like more than a beautiful, delicious rainbow…with a pot of gold chocolates at the end?!?
We made these colorful boxes of deliciousness as gifts for our leprechaun friends – to thank them for visiting us on St. Patrick’s Day. We also hoped that giving them a tasty treat (instead of trying to trap them) might keep them from wreaking havoc throughout our house. And it worked! π They even left a little thank you note – along with three gold leprechaun coins – to show their appreciation!
Rainbow Leprechaun Treats
Ingredients/Supplies:
- Rolos
- Froot Loops
- Mini Marshmallows
- Clear Candy/Favor Boxes
Instructions:
- Start by pouring a bowl of Froot Loops. Have your kiddos sort them all by color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). *Note: This is an excellent opportunity to practice/build color recognition skills, as well as an opportunity to analyze data (i.e. which color of cereal did they have the most of…the least…etc.).Β
- Assemble a clear favor box and add a layer of Rolos (i.e. the gold at the end of the rainbow).
- Next, add a layer of purple Froot Loops. Then a layer of blue Froot Loops.
- Continue adding layers of Froot Loops – in reverse rainbow order (green, yellow, orange, red).
- Add the last layer of mini marshmallows (i.e. the fluffy white cloud at the other end of the rainbow).
- Close the favor box – you can even secure the lid with a festive shamrock sticker (if desired).
- Have your kiddos write a little note to the leprechauns – telling them about the special rainbow treat that they made for them to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day!
On the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, our little nugget placed her leprechaun treats on our dining room table, before she went to sleep. While she was dreaming of all things green, I emptied the boxes. I made sure to leave a few scattered pieces on the table, along with the note and coins from the leprechauns (and a few little green footprints). The grin that appeared on her face the next morning was priceless. And her three gold leprechaun coins are still safely guarded in one of her many purses…to this very day. π
Clearly, leprechauns love receiving rainbow treats…but these colorful little boxes would also make excellent St. Patrick’s Day gifts for kiddos…or even wonderful party favors!
HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!
