I can’t believe that Independence Day is this Thursday! Summer seems to be flying by so fast this year. We were so caught up in our stellar space-theme last month, that we really didn’t leave a lot of time for Fourth of July crafting. Luckily, we stumbled upon a super quick and easy…yet super cute and patriotic holiday craft. And in case you’re feeling the holiday time-crunch too, we wanted to share these simple DIY Fourth of July Bubble Wands with all of you!
I’ve never met a kid who didn’t enjoy blowing, chasing, and popping bubbles! Plus…bubbles are a super fantastic (and safe) alternative to fireworks for our youngest children. They are not loud and scary, and there is zero risk of burns. For the past several years, a lot of places have even banned fireworks altogether, due to high fire danger. But bubbles are always fair game…and they are a great way to add some fun to the summer holiday festivities!
When I came across Rachel’s Patriotic DIY Bubble Wands, over on I Heart Crafty Things, I just knew that we had to make a few for our own holiday celebration! Our little nugget absolutely loved creating her very own bubble wands – she especially enjoyed adding all of the red, white, and blue beads. We made a few star-shaped bubble wands, per Rachel’s tutorial. And then we decided to take it one step further, and create some firework bubble wands! You just never know what kind of magic will result, when you let your kiddo’s creativity run wild. π
So…grab some pipe cleaners, beads, and bubble liquid…and let the creativity begin!
DIY Fourth of July Bubble Wands
Supplies:
- Red, White, and Blue Pipe Cleaners
- Red, White, and Blue Beads (we found our translucent pony beads and patriotic star beads at Hobby Lobby)
- Small Star and Circle Cookie Cutters (we actually snagged a couple from one of our playdough sets)
- Bubble Liquid
- Shallow Dish
How to Make the Bubble Wands:
- Grab a pipe cleaner and a cookie cutter of your choice.
- Starting with one end of the pipe cleaner…wrap it around the cookie cutter, until you meet back up at the starting point.
- Twist the two adjoining pieces of pipe cleaner together, securely. Once your shape (star or circle) is complete, you should end up with a long pipe cleaner handle.
- Decorate the handle of the bubble wand with patriotic beads…in whatever colors and patterns your heart desires. Leave roughly half-an-inch of pipe cleaner exposed at the bottom. Bend the end of the pipe cleaner back up into the hole of the last bead and give it a twist, to secure it in place.
- If you went with a circular bubble wand…feel free to cut a few small pieces of pipe cleaner and attach them around the circle…to create your very own firework bubble wand!Β *Note: While we loved the look of our firework bubble wands…they ended up being slightly frustrating when it came time for bubble-blowing…because they collect a lot of bubble liquid and then drip everywhere as you attempt to blow bubbles out of the center. π Feel free to give them a whirl…OR…you could try turning them into patriotic fairy/wizard wands as well (sans bubbles).Β
- Repeat the above process to create as many DIY Fourth of July Bubble Wands as you would like. Our little nugget loved decorating the wands with beads…so we ended up with quite a few!
How to Use the Bubble Wands:
- Grab your homemade red, white, and blue bubble wands (along with your bubble liquid and a shallow dish)…and head outside.
- Pour bubble liquid into the shallow dish (we just used a piece of Tupperware) – making sure to cover the bottom of the dish completely.
- Dip the top of your DIY bubble wand (the star or circle shape) down flat into the dish of bubble liquid.
- Bring the wet bubble wand up in front of your lips, and blow gently, until bubbles appear!
- Continue dipping and blowing until you’re all bubbled out. π
This was our first time making our very own bubble wands…but it certainly won’t be the last! This simple craft project is engaging from start to finish. Your kiddos will love crafting and beading their bubble wands…but they will jump for joy when they realize that their homemade bubble wands actually work! Let the bubble-blowing extravaganza commence!
