β« “Oh Christmas lights, light up the street, light up the fireworks in me. May all your troubles soon be gone, those Christmas lights keep shining on.” β«
– Christmas Lights by Coldplay
Christmas lights are hands-down my favorite thing about the holiday season. I have loved them since I was a little girl…watching my dad meticulously string lights on the exterior of our house each year, hoping to earn top prize in the town contest. I used to dream of seeing the Colorado state capitol building lit up in all of its colorful holiday glory – a sight that (now having seen it on multiple occasions) is still magical and breathtaking. My husband and I cherish our annual Christmas Eve light display tours around town – a tradition that we now happily share with our little nugget. And I could sit and stare at all of the twinkling lights on our Christmas tree for hours on end. So…we obviously had to make a craft to honor my favorite thing about Christmas…and this Dots Candy Christmas Lights Craft is absolutely perfect!
I had previously come across numerous fingerprint Christmas light crafts on Pinterest (like this adorable one from Michelle, at Crafty Morning). But we had quite a few boxes of Dots candy leftover from Halloween…and I knew that they would be an excellent addition to this new colorful holiday creation!
Dots Candy Christmas Lights Craft
Supplies:
- Dots Candies
- White Card Stock
- Black Marker
- Glue
Instructions:
- Grab a sheet of white card stock, and start drawing a swirly black line from one edge to the other. This will be the string for your lights. *Note: You want to use card stock, or a heavyweight paper, so that it is strong enough to support the Dots candies.
- Using the black marker, add little triangular shapes (with points touching the black line) at regular intervals along the string of lights. These serve as the spots where the candy lights will attach to the string.
- Empty the Dots candies out onto the table, so that they are readily available.
- Starting at one end of the paper, have your kiddos place a small dot of glue on the outer end of each triangle.
- Now, it’s time to add the colorful lights! Let your little ones gently press a Dots candy on top of each glue dot – until the string of lights is complete.
- Set the paper aside until the glue dries completely.
- Once the glue is dry, feel free to add a little holiday message, and then hang it up on display!
This is such a simple craft…but it’s one that your kiddos will thoroughly enjoy! It’s great for promoting those all-important motor skills, as well as hand-eye coordination. You can also practice pattern-making, counting, and color-recognition!
We love how all of the Dots candies brought our string of Christmas lights to life! In fact, this might be my favorite holiday craft yet! Then again…I’m partial to Christmas lights! π
