I’m always on the hunt for quiet activities that my toddler can enjoy independently, while I’m working in the kitchen. If the activity also provides a learning opportunity, I’ve hit the jackpot!
When I happened across some felt board ideas on Pinterest, I knew I wanted to try one at home with my daughter. I couldn’t find a large/full sheet of felt at the craft store, so I made do with four rectangular sheets that I then duct-taped to the end of our kitchen cabinets. I started out by just cutting out some fun shapes in varying colors of felt and then moved on to craft a snowman, a sun and some clouds, a tree, a flower, and a smiley face. While these sufficed for awhile, I determined that I just was not super skilled in creating awesome felt objects on my own. And that is where my Velcro idea emerged.
Every time I’ve passed down the aisle at the craft store with the little bins of small, flat, wooden animals and objects, I’ve found myself trying to figure out how I could use these incredibly cute little creations. They are very lightweight, there is usually quite a variety to choose from, and did I mention that they are super cute?!?
Thus, my problems were solved! I found some small, square Velcro stickers at Hobby Lobby and stuck
the scratchy-side of the Velcro onto the back of these little wooden wonders and Ta-Da! Just like that my daughter had some super cool animals, ocean creatures, and transportation vehicles to stick up on her felt board…and they work like a charm!
Next up will be creating a few more items so that we can use the felt board when we sing some of our favorite songs (The Wheels on the Bus, Old MacDonald, The Itsy-Bitsy Spider, and so on).
There are always options, if you find that (like me) you are not the best at certain crafty creations. And you don’t have to break the bank either – these little wooden wondersΒ typically range from $1 to $4 each. The Velcro stickers come in a pack of 24 forΒ approximately $3.
Being creative and crafty doesn’t always mean making every single little thing all by yourself!
