If you caught our Watercolor Salt Painting post last week, then you already know that we’ve been slightly obsessed with watercolors lately! We just can’t get enough of the myriad of beautiful colors, that blend so effortlessly with one another. We want you to join in on the painting fun, so today, we’re sharing this awesome Hidden Letters – Watercolor Paint Resist Activity!
Your kiddos are sure to love this artistic endeavor, because once they put paint to paper, hidden letters will start to appear! This is a great activity for little ones who are learning their ABC’s and/or practicing letter recognition. You could even switch it up with some numbers. And for the older kiddos, who are learning to read…write them a secret message that only they can discover when their painting is complete. It’s fun for all ages, and super simple to set up!
Hidden Letters – Watercolor Paint Resist Activity
Supplies:
- White Watercolor Paper
- Watercolor Paints
- Water
- Paintbrush
- White Crayon
Instructions:
- Using the white crayon, write letters, numbers, or a secret message of your choosing, onto the white watercolor paper. The white crayon on the white paper makes it very difficult to see, and when you hand the paper over to your kiddos, they are likely to think it’s just a blank piece of paper!
- Have your kiddos dip their paintbrush into the water, and then into the color of their choosing. Apply the paint to the paper, and watch the magic happen! Paint until the entire piece of paper is covered (you don’t want to miss any hidden letters).
It’s extremely likely that your kiddos will want to discover hidden letters on more than just one piece of paper, so keep that white crayon and watercolor paper handy! 🙂
Our little nugget absolutely loved this activity! And I loved that it was artistic, educational, colorful, engaging, and fun. What’s more…it took mere minutes to set up, and it kept her occupied for a good, quality chunk of time. A winning activity in everyone’s book!
We loved this watercolor paint resist technique so much, that we even utilized it to make a valentine for Daddy this past week!
I’ve come across a multitude of posts on Instagram, with people sharing this fun paint resist technique, but I think the first place that I ever saw it, was over on Busy Toddler!
Stay tuned…on Thursday we will be sharing another fun watercolor activity (and this one involves sugar cubes)!
