When children are young, their coloring artwork looks like a bunch of scribbles…at least to adults. But their creations are not just scribbles – they have color, character, shape, and personality! That’s why I love Diane Alber’s book, I’m NOT Just a Scribble…ย The main character (Scribble), along with the other illustrations in the book, are completely relatable for young artists. And the story line weaves a beautiful and important message of acceptance despite differences. We love everything about this book…especially the sheet of stickers that encourages readers to create their very own scribble art!
We gifted our daughter with this amazing children’s book for her recent birthday, and it was an instant hit! She immediately fell in love with Scribble and all of his colorful transformations. He’s incredibly friendly and oh so eager to play. But the other drawings want nothing to do with Scribble…they think his lines are too messy and his colors are too bright. Their distaste for his differences and unique character traits makes Scribble a bit blue…but it doesn’t keep him down for long – he changes his colors and marches right along! And before you know it, they all become friends and create something magical together!
After reading Scribble’s story several times over, we were inspired to create our very own scribbles. So, we grabbed our scribble stickers, various sheets of paper, crayons, markers, and oil pastels…and set off on a creative journey.
Once we got started, we just couldn’t stop. We made scribble after scribble…and we loved every single minute! I loved watching our little nugget’s scribbles come to life. It didn’t take long before she proclaimed herself the official sticker picker…carefully selecting each pairing of eyeballs and smiles for every single scribble.
We spent well over an hour creating all of our scribbles (and we still have plenty of stickers left to make even more)! Our little nugget’s preferred coloring utensils were definitely the markers, whereas I fell in love with the vibrant and bold look of the oil pastels.
Needless to say, all of our scribbles are now happily adorning an entire wall in our dining room. ๐ And we can’t wait to make more! I’m actually intrigued to try our hand at some oil pastel and watercolor resist scribbles (as featured in our Photo Paper Painting post).
In all seriousness, if you have yet to grab a copy of I’m NOT Just a Scribble… by Diane Alber, you should get one right now! It’s a beautiful story AND creative art project, all rolled into one clever package. Diane has a similar book that was just released earlier this month, titled Splatter, that we can’t wait to get our hands on!
