Construction projects are always booming in the summertime. On our recent outings around town we’ve noticed a multitude of road construction, as well as building construction. Our little nugget loves when we come across a construction site, because it means there will be big construction trucks! I have yet to meet a child who dislikes construction trucks. Our daughter’s absolute favorite is the cement truck. She’s been pointing out every single cement truck that crosses our path, for over a couple of years now. π As I’m sure you know by now, we love using literature to learn all about our favorite things. So naturally, we have a stack of construction truck books sitting on our living room ottoman, and we wanted to share our favorites with you!
Our little nugget loves flipping through all of these construction truck books…always excited to see which truck will appear on the following page. Excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, cement mixers, steamrollers, front-end loaders, and crane trucks abound!
Our Favorite Construction Truck Books

- Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker & Tom Lichtenheld
- This adorable story won our hearts from the very first time that we read it. I love how the construction trucks are featured in the story, showing readers exactly what each truck is capable of getting done. And our little nugget loves how the trucks tuck themselves in at night – with their teddy bears, blankets, and night lights. It’s a nice reminder that while we work hard and play hard during the day, it is equally important to rest and relax.
- Mighty, Mighty Construction Site byΒ Sherri Duskey Rinker & Tom Lichtenheld
- Mighty, Mighty Construction Site is the second installment from Rinker and Lichtenheld, and it is just as captivating as the first. We tag along as our favorite trucks wake up, store their night lights and blankets, and set off to build a new construction project. But this big project requires more horsepower, so a brand new group of mighty trucks join the team. We’re introduced to a skid steer, backhoe, flatbed, front-end loader, and pumper truck. With a focus on teamwork, this crew shows us that there is nothing they can’t do!
- Billions of Bricks by Kurt Cyrus
- This rhythmic story actually has nothing to do with trucks…focusing instead on the life of a human construction crew, and all of the great things they can build with bricks. We love the abundance of counting opportunities within the pages of this book. Our little nugget also enjoyed learning about the brick-making process. And then we obviously had to discuss what type of big construction truck would be necessary to transport all of the heavy blocks (we settled on a dump truck).
- The Digger and the Flower by Joseph Kuefler
- In this heartwarming tale, we follow along as Digger and his friends, Crane and Dozer, build large buildings all over the city. That is, until the day Digger discovers the most beautiful flower growing in an empty lot. Digger stops digging and devotes all of his time to the flower (making sure to keep it hydrated, protecting it from strong winds, and singing it to sleep each and every night). But one day, his old friends show up to start building in the lot, and before Digger can stop them, Dozer plows over the beautiful flower. When the dust settles, a mournful Digger notices three tiny seeds. He scoops them up and takes them far away…to a place where the big trucks never go. He digs and plants, and when three new flowers appear, he dedicates his days to keeping them safe.
- Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney
- Anna Dewdney (author of the Llama Llama series) teaches children a wonderful lesson in Little Excavator – that though they are small, they can still accomplish great things! The little construction truck finds himself over-shadowed by all of the big construction trucks, who have come to turn a disheveled empty lot into a beautiful neighborhood park. That is, until all of the big trucks realize that they are much too large to complete the final task. Little E proudly carries the apple tree sapling across the small bridge, and happily plants it in the center of the island!
- My Truck Is Stuck! by Kevin Lewis & Daniel Kirk
- A big dump truck, carrying a heavy load, is rolling down the road…until one of their wheels ends up in a giant hole. The truck is stuck! They call for help…a tug and tow…but a car, a moving truck, a jeep, and a school bus can’t help them go. That’s when a tow truck shows up to help get them back on the road. But how long will it take them to notice that a few sneaky creatures took off with their cargo?
- Truck, Truck, Goose! by Tammi Sauer & Zoe Waring
- Goose is heading out for a picnic, and bringing everything but the kitchen sink in tow. He doesn’t realize when his piano falls out of the wagon and blocks the road…resulting in a parade of trucks getting stuck in a giant traffic jam. Firetrucks, mail trucks, cement mixers, dump trucks, garbage trucks…they all have nowhere to go. They get out and try to push the piano, but it’s no use. It’s time to call in another truck…a tow truck! And with the piano out of the way, the ice cream truck is here to stay. π
- Old MacDonald Had a Truck by Steve Goetz & Eda Kaban
- Everyone loves to sing “Old MacDonald” but in this clever twist, we get to learn all about the big trucks that help out on the farm. With a dig dig here, and a spin whirl there. Your truck-obsessed kiddos are going to love singing along!
- Trucks by Byron Barton
- This cute board book was our daughter’s very first truck book, and she still loves flipping through the pages to this very day. It’s a wonderful introduction to the various types of trucks that we see in our world on a regular basis…trash trucks, bread trucks, bucket trucks, moving trucks, and the ever-popular…ice cream trucks!
We’ve had so much fun reading, and learning, about all of the different construction trucks. We hope that you have a chance to pick up a few of our favorites from your local library. And stay tuned…on Thursday we will be sharing an awesome construction truck sensory activity!
