Our Halloween Suncatchers came down this morning, as we packed up all of our spooky and ghoulish decorations. We knew that our windows would suddenly look drab and bare, so we decided to craft these incredibly colorful Painted Glue Suncatchers to brighten things up!
We’ve been slightly obsessed with suncatchers lately…so, when I came across these vibrant and beautiful Cosmic Suncatchers (over on Babble Dabble Do), we raced to our craft room to get started!
I’ve loved Ana’s blog for quite some time – she always shares the most creative and fun ideas, and these suncatchers do not disappoint. Feel free to follow the above link to see her full tutorial (I’ve also included a set of instructions below). And if you have a few extra minutes…make sure to browse around Babble Dabble Do – I guarantee that you will find some great ideas to share with your kiddos!
Painted Glue Suncatchers
Supplies:
- Recycled Plastic Lids (we grabbed two old soup container lids out of our recycle bin)
- White Glue (we prefer Elmer’s)
- Food Coloring
- Toothpicks
- Hole Punch
- Ribbon
Instructions:
- Pour the white glue into the lid, until you have a nice even layer covering the bottom.
- Add drops of food coloring. Note: Less is more on this step – unless you want a brown suncatcher. π
- Using a toothpick, gently swirl the food coloring around in the glue. You don’t want to swirl too much, since the food coloring will actually expand in the glue as it dries.
- When you’re satisfied with your swirls, set the lid in a safe place to dry completely. This can take up to a few days.
- Once all of the glue has dried, carefully peel the suncatcher from the lid.
- To hang…punch a whole through one side, and string through a piece of ribbon. Hang in a sunny window!
Note: The suncatchers will likely curl and change shape the longer they hang in the sunlight, but I actually like how ours morphed after a day hanging in the window.Β
There is so much to love about this craft…it’s quick and simple, utilizes recycled objects and other household items, the process itself is simply mesmerizing, and the finished product is truly magnificent! The only downside is waiting for the suncatchers to dry…but it provides the perfect lesson in the importance of patience. Good things come to those who wait, right?!? π
These colorful Painted Glue Suncatchers remind me of our Melted Craft Bead Suncatchers, but these are way less cumbersome to make!
Have you ever painted glue before? This was a brand new experience for us, and now we’re hooked!
