Do you have any extra Froot Loops lying around now that St. Patrick’s Day is over? We usually only have Froot Loops in the house during the month of March, because we tend to use them for various rainbow-themed St. Patrick’s Day crafts, snacks, and activities. With the holiday officially behind us, we’ve been looking for fun ways to utilize the remainder of our loops. And making Snack Necklaces has always been a huge hit with our little nugget!
I mean, you can really never go wrong with an activity that allows your kiddos to engage, create, and snack…all at the same time. π Plus, this simple activity provides ample practice for those all-important fine motor skills. It takes quite a bit of focus and hand-eye coordination to get all of those delicious snacks onto one tiny string!
Snack Necklaces
Ingredients/Supplies:
- Various Dry Foods with at Least One Hole for Threading – We Used the Following:
- Honey Nut Cheerios
- Froot Loops
- Kashi Heart to Heart Cereal (just the o’s)
- Mini Pretzels
- Plastic Jewelry Cord (like this one from Stretch Magic – that you can typically find at craft stores)
- Tape (optional)
Instructions:
- Measure out the approximate length of jewelry cord that you will need to create a necklace for your little one. Cut to size.
- I highly recommend taping down one end of the jewelry cord to a flat surface. This prohibits all of the goodies from flying off the other end of the necklace while it is being crafted…which inevitably results in frustrated kiddos, as well as a bit of a mess.
- Place your little one’s goodies of choice in separate bowls, and set them on the table next to the taped-down jewelry cord.
- Let your kiddos go crazy crafting their one-of-a-kind snack necklaces!
- When they are finished, secure the jewelry cord with a double knot and place the necklace around your little one’s neck.
- Let snack time commence!
Note: When the snack necklace has been devoured, you can easily untie it, and rinse off the jewelry cord. Now you’re ready for any future necklace crafting sessions!
I remember absolutely loving candy necklaces when I was a little girl. There was just something so intriguing about getting to wear colorful jewelry that you could also nibble on throughout the day. π These snack necklaces are obviously a bit more on the healthier side…but…they are still a huge hit with our little nugget!
