“There’s magic in this tiny seed. Press it down and count to three. Plant another, then one more. Press them down and count to four.”
– Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson
I recently realized that we have yet to share a post of our favorite springtime stories on the blog…which is crazy…because there are so many great Spring-themed children’s books out there. Reading books is a great way to celebrate a brand new season AND a great way to teach your kiddos all about the beautiful things to come during the new time of year. Now that it’s finally starting to feel like Spring in Colorado, we wanted to share the stack of springtime stories that we’ve been loving lately!
We’ve got flowers and trees, birds and bugs, springtime weather and lots of cute baby animals! Spring happens to be the perfect season to introduce your little ones to the concept of life and growth. It’s certainly a magical time of year, when everything comes back to life – when bright colors decorate the landscapes, when sunshine and rainbows fill the sky, and when the wonderful scents of flowers start to fill the air. Well…for those of us with allergies, springtime can be a bit less magical…but magical nonetheless. π

- Little Blue Truck’s Springtime by Alice Schertle
- Beep! Beep! Beep! We love joining Little Blue Truck on all of his adventures! And we thoroughly enjoyed tagging along on his journey around the farm as Spring began to blossom. This beautifully-illustrated, lift-the-flap book is full of all sorts of adorable baby animal surprises!
- Shake a Leg, Egg! by Kurt Cyrus
- It’s springtime and everything is hatching…everything except one little goose egg. A mother goose and four baby goslings all wait in anticipation for the final egg to hatch. Around them, the pond is coming to life – crows are calling, buds are bursting, wings are whistling. Come on little one…the world is waiting!
- Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson
- This interactive book will have your little ones learning the life-cycle of flowers in no time. And they will experience all of the important elements that help make flowers grow – like soil, water, and lots of sunshine!
- My Garden by Kevin Henkes
- This marvelous story follows a little girl who enjoys helping her mother tend the garden. She helps water and weed, and she chases the rabbits away from the lettuce. But if she had her very own garden, things would be a little different. There would be no weeds, and the flowers would just keep blooming. Her flowers would be able to change colors…with a single thought. And the rabbits wouldn’t eat the lettuce, because the rabbits would be made of chocolate…and the little girl would eat them! π We absolutely loved watching this young gardener’s creativity and imagination unfold. If you had your own dream garden, what would you grow?!?
- This Is the Nest That Robin Built by Denise Fleming
- Robin is ready to build her nest and her animal friends are here to help! Squirrel trims the twigs, horse shares his straw, pig mixes the mud, rabbit picks the grass…and robin weaves it all together, to build a safe little spot to lay her bright blue eggs.
- Sorting Through Spring (Math in Nature) by Lizann Flatt
- This clever book introduces little ones to the concepts of patterns, shapes, counting, sorting, and probability – all while journeying through nature during springtime! What if nature understood numbers just like you? Would raindrops fall in rhythm? Would birds balance eggs evenly on tree branches? Would flowers grow in patterns? Would caribou sort their fallen antlers into specific piles? With this book, you can practice some math skills, while also learning a few fun facts about various animals!
- If You Hold a Seed by Elly MacKay
- “If you hold a seed, and make a wish, and plant it in the ground…something magical can happen.” Join a little boy as he makes a wish, plants a seed, and waits to watch it grow into a beautiful tree. He keeps an eye on it as it passes through numerous seasons…year by year…until it becomes big enough to hold him in its branches. But having a tree that can hold him wasn’t the little boy’s ultimate goal…he wanted something more. And you will just have to read this lovely story to discover his true wish.
- The Twelve Days of Springtime: A School Counting BookΒ by Deborah Lee Rose
- If you’ve come across our favorite Christmas books before, you already know how much we adore The Twelve Days of Christmas! So, we obviously had to snag this springtime version from our local library. π Follow along as a rambunctious group of young students explores everything that Spring has to offer – from planting and gardening…to watching the transformation of tadpoles to frogs. In all honesty, the illustrations in this book left me wanting (I could surely do without the student picking their nose on every single page). But, as I anticipated, our little nugget absolutely loves singing this new springtime version of one of her favorite songs (so I let the subpar illustrations slide).
- Robins! How They Grow Up by Eileen Christelow
- Robins are often celebrated as one of the first signs of Spring in North America. And I don’t know about you, but I’m always excited to see them return to our backyard! Our daughter loves watching for them. In fact, robins were the very first bird that she could accurately identify on her own. Needless to say, I figured we could stand to learn a bit more about them, and this informative book contains a wealth of robin knowledge. Join two teenage robins as they journey through their first year of life – sharing numerous detailed facts along the way.
- Rain by Sam Usher
- In January, we shared our favorite winter books…which included Snow by Sam Usher. Since we enjoyed reading about young Sam and his Granddad so much, we decided to pickup the next seasonal installment! The snow has now melted and Spring has officially arrived…and along with it, a giant rainstorm. Sam can’t wait to get outside to catch raindrops, splash in puddles, and glimpse his reflection in all of the standing water. But Granddad wants to wait for the rain to stop. The question is, will the rain ever stop?!? Will Sam and his Granddad embark on a wet and wild adventure? You will just have to grab a copy of this book and find out for yourself.
- Bugs Galore by Peter Stein
- This colorful book, full of all kinds of creepy critters, stole our daughter’s heart from the very first page! We’ve read it so many times, I’ve honestly lost count. π And while I’m not normally a big fan of bugs in general, I find that I always have a smile on my face as we read this cute, rhythmic story. It’s hard to hold back your giggles when each page contains the silliest looking bugs that you’ve ever seen. “Bugs are awesome, oddly mild, feared and weird, destructive, wild, otherworldly, pesky, chilling, undercover, fun and thrilling!”
- It Starts With a Seed by Laura Knowles
- This beautiful book follows the life of a single seed – from root to shoot and tiny leaves…through the seasons…to a giant tree! As the tree branches and grows, numerous woodland creatures begin to call it home. And when the tree grows seeds that blow in the breeze…those seeds just might grow into brand new trees!
- Singing in the Rain by Arthur Freed, Nacio Herb Brown & Tim Hopgood
- “I’m singing in the rain, just singing in the rain. What a glorious feeling…I’m happy again.” Springtime is the perfect time to break out this classic Broadway song…and we simply can’t get enough of all the colorful illustrations by Tim Hopgood! In all seriousness, this book is a must-have for your home library…so go grab a copy, if you haven’t already.
We are just loving all of the colorful flowers and bugs that we’ve discovered throughout the pages of these amazing books. In fact, a few of them have even inspired us to create some fun Spring crafts…so stay tuned!
