This Sunday (April 22nd) is Earth Day! Since it’s inception in 1970, the day has become a global environmental movement. And for most, it’s a day of civic participation, in honor of the beautiful planet that we call home. People plant trees and flowers, clean-up garbage from the sides of roads and highways, campaign for environmental protections, and petition elected officials to protect our air, water, and soil. In general, it’s a day for people to give back to Mother Nature. Last year, we decided to give back to nature with an act of kindness toward our feathered friends, with this simple DIY Bird Feeder – Kids Craft!
Our little nugget loved being able to make her very own bird feeder, to hang in our backyard! She was able to perform each step of the task on her own, and she was very proud of the final product. π
A big thank you goes out to Kim, over at The Resourceful Mama, where we stumbled upon this awesome Easy Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder CraftΒ idea!
DIY Bird Feeder – Kids Craft
Supplies:
- Empty Toilet Paper Tubes
- Creamy Peanut Butter
- Bird Seed
- Popsicle Sticks
- Twine/Fishing Line
Instructions:
- Start by pouring a decent amount of bird seed onto a tray (we poured ours into a small plastic bin).
- Using the popsicle sticks, spread an even layer of creamy peanut butter around the exterior of the toilet paper tube.
- Once the tube is completely covered in peanut butter, gently set it down on top of the bird seed.
- Carefully roll the tube in the bird seed, until the entire tube is covered. We found this process to be easiest when we used a rubber spatula to roll the tube through the bird seed – it kept our fingers from becoming a sticky mess. π
- String a piece of twine/fishing line through the inside of the tube.
- Hang the bird feeder from a tree (or post) outside, and invite all of the neighborhood birds over for a snack!
This bird feeder craft was so quick and easy to make, and our little nugget loved creating a little treat for the animals to enjoy! She kept a watchful eye out the sliding glass door, before shouting with glee when our first visitor arrived.
Unfortunately, the family of clever squirrels in our neighborhood arrived well before the birds…and they devoured every last morsel. So, our act of kindness for the birds became an act of kindness for the squirrels…but we still gave back to some of nature’s animals, and we made a handful of squirrels very happy that day! π
